Running a business is harder than it seems, you might think “Oh, she has a cleaning business. That’s super easy to launch!” or “Wow, she got a business degree and is doing that?” Some people even go as far as assuming that me and my team are doing this because we can’t do anything else. Well let me tell you that running a cleaning company is difficult, growing it much more. Also know that you offering house cleaning as owner operator is not the same thing as running a company that is competing with large multi-million dollar franchise companies.

I’m writing this because I want to share some aspects of growing a business.

Part of our compensation and benefits to our maid team is that we will work with them to build a team of dedicated members under each who commits to the values and efforts Honest Maids is about. We will do our best to get them their own franchise in their own area fully and independently operated by them. This letter should give them a bit of insight too onto what they should expect. There are days were Honest Maids receives 10 calls a day, there’s others where we get none. In this environment marketing and pricing is everything but we are working hard to build a trustworthy brand that doesn’t have to compete on price alone and instead compete based on quality and commitment.

To do so, there is a branding effort that must take place, the strategies for this are time consuming and any misstep can cause the entire plan to fail. We depend a lot on social media- why? Well

  • Franchise companies have hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in Google Search results, we can’t compete with that.
  • Referrals are huge in this type of business, we are still building ours – most clients will freely share with friends but is harder than it seems to get customers to go to Yelp or others to leave a good review. Unless that review is bad, then you better bet they will be there.
  • A lack of Yelp or Google or BBB reviews is actually a good thing because of this, but few people realize that. Social Media remains key.
  • My husband is a marketing genius! Really! He has achieved for our website to receive hundreds of visits a day on a $0 ad budget. All content and all just good PR which is free.

We would love to use Yelp, and although you can leave reviews there of us we don’t promote in it. WHY NOT?

  • Yelp is running like a mob, unless you are a business you might not realize that you get blackmailed into spending “advertising” with them.
  • Competing businesses are promoted in your own profile!! Unless of course you pay hundreds of dollars a month to keep them from doing that.
  • My personal thought is that once you receive a call from them and reject their “ads service” they stop or reduce the search results for your business!! I tracked this after I noticed a sudden drop in visits where before we had a ton of traffic. – Again, my thoughts based on experience.
  • This leads me to this, if you want Yelp to show more of your business you guessed it! You gotta pay!
  • If you want to have a slideshow of your products or completed services…Yup! You gotta pay!
  • Restrict Competitors Ads on your own page? Yup, you gotta pay!
  • Then they have their actual ad services which help you in return appear in competitors profiles.

So as you see, marketing can be difficult and expensive. Social Media is by far the best approach, as a business owner there are many things I need to make sure get done, like payroll and other HR issues, sales are being processed, insurances and bonding get added to each job and maid member, answer customer and employee phone calls (although my husband takes care of this for the most part).

My husband, he has been helping with a lot of the workload, but the burden falls on me since this is my business and my company. Employee and Customer satisfaction is a team responsibility. So as you can see, there is a lot to do no matter what business you are in and marketing, building a reputation, crafting an image, spreading the word, getting visitors to your website, complying with state and local laws, keeping customers happy, earning trust, building a team, helping with cleans, training and growing the business is not a menial task. It requires a savvy entrepreneur who can take on big enterprises and do so with her chin up.

Believe it or not! November is by far the best month to buy and or list a home in Phoenix, AZ!

I’m Humberto (Marketing) I hold an Arizona Realtor license, although I don’t ‘hang it’ at a broker’s office, and I tend to look at the trends in the market (I also do this for marketing purposes for Honest Maids) and I have found out that November is actually the best time of the year to list a home here in our lovely Phoenix Arizona.

Most Arizona home buyers refuse the idea of listing a house near thanksgiving or Christmas time and this holds true to buying. WHY? Well think about it, you might have plans to travel to visit family or family might be planning to visit you for the holidays, the last thing you want to do is be in the middle of packing or unpacking all of your belongings. October/November  is just the right moment during the year giving you plenty of time to work on the house, clean it up to take some nice pictures and have it listed through the month and end of year. The beginning of the year is when a lot of those who don’t buy in September or October will buy in because the holidays are past and income tax season for many equals down payment money. Plus families are eager to start the year in a new home.

Those who are looking to purchase a home before the holidays negotiate more aggressively and those who don’t have the time for it simply often offer more than original asking price – If you are a seller what I find even better is that a lot of sellers often take their homes off the market during the holiday season (You know, to avoid having to show their home during their Thanksgiving break). Team-Member-2Early, fun, hectic, happy and sometimes magical!

As a full-time worker, wife, mother to two children (ages 5 and 7) and, as my husband will tell you, someone who likes to “do it all, and do it right” every day is a constant juggle and quest to create more time out of less and less available time. I have a regular job like any other person. Here is my day:

Wake-up: I’m an early bird—so I try to seize “Christina’s time” first thing in the morning (on weekends mostly). I get up between 4:30-5:30am and quickly scan my email, brush my teeth and get the kids’ stuff ready. No time to do the bed.

Breakfast: Super quick, something simple. No time to pick up and clean the kitchen.

School Run: You know how it is. Hectic in the morning and hectic in the evening.

Work Day: Well, you know that is too. Mostly blah.

Family Time: 6-7:30pm is family time, as many nights of the week as I can make it. When I get home I try to have something in mind for dinner, prepare it quickly so we can get to homework. Hubby helps me clean the kitchen sometimes, but often times there are other things that go neglected so is always a balancing act – what to clean and when to clean it.

(Sometimes the kitchen stays dirty until the weekend when we have more time to actually clean good and give it a fresh start for the following week)

Bed: By 9:00, that’s the goal anyway. But because we have so little time after work for family, homework, dinner, and clean up and then showers and prepping for bed we often lay down around 10:00 or 10:30! Only to wake up again at around 5am.

Weekends: We use about half a day to clean the entire house and wash our clothes. I do it mostly myself. Sometimes the house is so dirty I split the cleaning into Saturday and Sunday. I’m tired.

My story

Here is a bit more about myself.

As a Hispanic growing up in Phoenix, I didn’t learn about the importance of a relaxed healthy lifestyle was until it was a bit too late. As society have a hectic modern schedule, always running errand, working, cleaning, we are also go-getters, entrepreneurs, and if you have a family your free-time is much less. A few years ago I became ill and that’s when the importance of a life with less chemicals, more organic, and eco-friendly products really became clear and as my health, time and husband’s time allowed we cleaned our home then needed to hire maids to help us out… Unfortunately, hiring the right maid service was so difficult and time consuming! Honest Maids was started because I believe that a clean home has the power to improve a person’s mood and promote a healthier lifestyle getting rid of the stressful and tiring chores around our home. Cleaning it for you must be so much better. We give you more free time, take away exhaustion, clean with safe products and offer our hands as friends!

I began searching for the best cleaning products that are industrial grade and as effective as the chemical based products used by other maids, I set out asking other maid clients for pet-peeves and wishes and created a cleaning method that is not only efficient but is sustainable and allows us to pay our maids more while charging you a lot less! This is something I am truly proud of and exited to be a part of.

Making HonestMaids A Scalable Business

Yes, Honest Maids is a cleaning company but I don’t like to see it as just that. My purpose for creating this company has never been to give myself another job, or to be a business owner. In 2012 I became ill and after months of fighting high costs for cleaning services my husband and I decided it was time. We hired a few of the local cleaning companies, some freelance contractors and we were never satisfied with the level of service and their rates. I mean some of those rates are just ridiculous and the way they base their fees are so exaggerated. I began training my own hired contractor so that she would understand the perspective of good business operations and customer satisfaction; my background is in business and quality assurance. She loved it and her other clients did too. I knew I could help other families through better service and lower prices.
I want to share with you my plans (partial) as to how I am hoping to grow Honest Maids to be a scalable sustainable business here in the valley.
1. I will never outsource our core competitiveness which is our dedication to you, our neighbors and patrons.
2. Provide our team members with all the attention and care that is offered to our client family so that our team members can better provide for their families and don’t see the ‘maid industry’ as a temporary employment. Part of how I intend to do this is by training our Honest Maids in the areas of business, marketing and customer service.
3. Test! We are young and agile and I plan to take advantage of this by continuously testing new product offerings to you, new pricing strategies so that we can save you more money without sacrificing our Honest Maids livelihood. Test new products in house so that we can always make our services faster and more efficient and ever more safe.
4. Hire entrepreneurs.
5. Stay on top of a niche. By recognizing market deficiencies we can better test and better cater to your needs and offer amazing solutions for your home.
6. Always ask for new opportunities and provide those opportunities to our Honest Maids and team members.
7. Add more services to better serve you and your home.
