We’ve been Vegan for a while now and I gotta tell you it’s great! Lupus is a horrible thing and the only thing that controls it is diet… so is not like we planned on being vegan, our bodies kind of just asked and led us to this. We also don’t support animal cruelty and strongly subscribe to the idea that animals aren’t really here for us but with us. Veganism was the perfect fit for us. Anyway, one thing is for sure and that is that we love to cook!!

This vegan pho recipe will have you pouring more and more!

SUPER EASY VEGAN PHO!

Makes about 6 decent size servings

Recipe

Vegan Pho Recipe Ingredients:

🌱🍜

🍜 10 oz rice noodles (1 packet of rice noodles)
🍜 1 tablespoon whole black crushed pepper
🍜 1 tablespoon coriander
🍜 4 pods whole star anise (sprouts has them to buy per ounce, no need to buy a whole container)Anise is what gives PHO its distinctive scent and flavor. 💪

🍜 1 piece fresh ginger, about 2 inch piece thinly sliced
🍜 1 bunch green onion (white part sliced and green part sliced too. White is for cooking, green is as garnish later)
🍜 about 8 cups water
🍜 3-4 tbsp vegan bouillon (I use the Not-Beef Cubes brand)
🍜 2 tbsp soy sauce (for during cooking and after as garnish to taste)
🍜 Firm Tofu – fried on all sides with pepper, salt and coconut oil.

FOR SERVING, garnish to taste
🍜 Limes cut in wedges
🍜 1 jalapeño thinly sliced with seeds in
🍜 1 bunch fresh basil torn/ chopped
🍜 1 bunch green onion or cilantro
🍜 Siracha hot sauce
🍜 Fresh Bean Sprouts

Directions:
🍜 1. Fill a large bowl with warm water or heat up and then let sit. Place rice noodles and soak for about 15 minutes.

🍜 2. Meanwhile, heat a large deep pot over medium-high heat. Toast the black pepper, coriander, and star anise pods for 3 minutes, until fragrant I use a bit coconut oil to mix.

🍜 3. Also heat up another pan to fry the tofu. You will need to drain the tofu first. Cut into strips (not cubes) to fry first. Cut to cubes at the end when you’re mixing it all in the step 2 pot.

🍜 4. While the condiments are toasting, peel the ginger and cut into pieces. Trim the ends off the green onions, then chop 5 inches off the bases and save the remaining green tops for later.

🍜 5. Add the ginger and green onion bases to the pot then add the water and vegan bouillon. Increase the heat to high, cover, and bring to a simmer. Cook for 20 minutes. Turn off the heat.

🍜 6. While the broth heats up, thinly slice the green onion tops. Cut the lime into wedges. Thinly slice the jalapeño.

🍜 7. After about 15 minutes of soaking, drain the rice noodles, let cool for a bit then return to the step 2 pot. You should have all the condiments with water and bouillon simmering ready to add the rice noodles and the fried tofu.

🍜 8. Add the tofu squares into the pot along with the rice noodles and then also about 2 table spoons of soy sauce (this is to taste, check the broth to see if it needs more soy sauce or anise) If you add more anise, let it simmer for a few more minutes on medium heat.
🍜 9. Serve onto bowls and add your garnish.

Try it and share your pics with me here if you like it! I had 2 bowls of that last night!! YUM

A woman found a DEAD (baby?) tortoise in her vagina!

phoenix zoo turtle

Ok, so this blog post has NOTHING to do with home or family, but I thought it was just random that it’s most definitely worth sharing! So… Let’s just jump right in.

A woman who was vacationing in Spain found a dead (!!?) tortoise (?!) in her vagina (I Know!!!), the unnamed woman is now actually trying to convince the local police that she has no idea where the turtle came from (WTFkasdfapuhfahuh!?!),  The Sun reports.

The possibly, turtle loving robber, British woman, who lives on the island of Tenerife in Spain, went to the El Mojon hospital recently complaining of severe pain in her genitals.  According to the local newspaper El Día, upon examining her, doctors discovered a dead tortoise in her vagina, which had resulted in a serious infection.

The doctors called the police “over concern about how the animal had ended up in her private parts” and to determine whether she had been the victim of sexual assault. The woman said she did not want to pursue the matter…. HMMMM??! Well, I’m the woman, with no choice but to go to the hospital, I’m going to probably made up a story of how I ‘don’t know’ how a turtle ended up there. But in reality, how can you not know?!? LOL So what do you think?

phoenix zoo turtle

Think she was a victim of possible sexual assault?

Maybe she was having such great nap that didn’t notice a crawly cozing up? or maybe, just maybe – she visited the zoo and loved the little baby animal so much she actually tried to steal one by putting in the only accessible place (if you’re that kind of person!) she had available! LOL

How Often You Should Clean the Most Commonly Neglected Parts of Your Home

3201143-450px

You probably do the basic stuff when you clean your home, like wiping down counters and washing sheets, but some things undoubtedly get forgotten. This visual guide can help you establish a regular cleaning schedule for the stuff that tends to fall by the wayside.

The guide, from housewares provider Moshells, shows you the parts of a home that often go neglected, and how often you should actually give them some attention. For example, garbage disposals should be cleaned out once a week, bath mats should be washed every two weeks, indoor trash cans need to be rinsed every couple months, window screens should be tidied up once a year, pet bowls are best washed daily, and even children’s toys could use a wipe down or wash once a month. The guide also tells you the best way to go about caring for each area. You can check out the full graphic below.

10 THINGS I LEARNED ABOUT ENTREPRENEURSHIP

diana funny honest maids Oh the things I have learned so far!

You would be surprised and motivated to read our thoughts about how to run a small business, specially if you are in a family business. When I started, I had already years hearing that entrepreneurship is great and is a noble cause. But the cold hard truth is that it’s hard, you get into a position where you must make sacrifice for you, your family, and your business. If you make a mistake, clients and the general public don’t really often care and want to crucify you for not calling them back right away, for not giving them as much of a discount as they want only because they want it.  There are many things I have learned and many things I can share with you. We mention things like how to delegate, what to expect, when to ask for advice, how your kid’s Godparents tie into your world of business. Read more about the 10 things we’ve learned about entrepreneurship on my husband’s blog post on Medium.

Dirty laundry in the bedroom attracts bed bugs

CALL 602-BED-BUGS

Bad news: Bed bugs like the smell of your dirty laundry

glendale homeowners Bed bugs are more likely to be attracted to dirty clothes than clean clothes

Bed bugs are more likely to be attracted to dirty clothes than clean clothes

If you’ve been putting off doing a load of laundry, it could be an idea to stick it on now. We’ve all heard the expression “sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite”, but there could be a way of stopping this from happening. Far from being a fictional creature, bedbugs are small blood-sucking insects that live in cracks and crevices in and around beds. They crawl out at night and bite exposed skin but it seems that dirty laundry could be a major cause of the problem. Although they end up in beds, to feed on blood, new research has suggested that the problem could start in your laundry basket.

Dirty clothes

An experiment, led by the University of Arizona, found that leaving worn clothes exposed in sleeping areas when traveling may facilitate the dispersal of bed bugs. The insects commonly find their way into clothes and luggage but are twice as likely to aggregate on bags containing soiled clothes compared to those containing clean clothes. Four tote bags of dirty clothes were placed – two containing soiled clothes, two with clean clothes – in the presence of bed bugs. Both the rooms were temperature controlled but only one room received an increase in carbon dioxide concentration to stimulate the effect of a human breathing. The study concluded that, in the absence of humans, bed bugs were twice as likely to head for bags containing soiled clothes.

Using a sealed bag

This suggests human odor on dirty clothes acts as an elicitor of host-seeking behavior in bed bugs. So, dirty laundry left in an open suitcase or left on the floor of an infested room may attract bed bugs. Scientists have recommended that keeping laundry in a sealed bag, particularly when staying in a hotel, could reduce the chances of people taking bed bugs home with them. Dr. Hentley from the University of Arizona said: “Bed bugs are a huge problem for hotel and homeowners, particularly in some of the world’s biggest and busiest cities. “Once a room is infested with bed bugs, they can be very difficult to get rid of, which can result in people having to dispose of clothes and furniture that can be really costly.”
One of the most common questions we get is, “I’ve got bug bites, does that mean I have bed bugs?” This can be especially concerning if you notice bites on your children and aren’t sure where they came from.

Here is what you need to know about bedbug bites.

Most bedbugs feed exclusively on human blood to grow and survive. Phoenix bed bugs do not feed every day, so depending on how many bedbugs are living in your home, you may not have new bites consistently.

While bed bugs are most active at night, they are not exclusively nocturnal. What attracts them is the warmth, moisture and carbon dioxide released from warm-blooded animals, according to Purdue University. If you or your family are being bit by these bed bugs, you’ll most likely find the bites on exposed areas of the body like your face, neck, arms and hands. The problem is, bedbug bites can look very similar to other bug bites you might find in or around your home, like fleas or mosquitos. People also react differently to bedbug bites, so they don’t always look the same.

Luckily, while bed bug bites may cause allergic reactions in some people that do need to be treated, they are not known to carry other diseases. You do want to avoid scratching any bug bites though because scratching your skin can increase your chances of getting an infection.
Simply having bug bites is not a guarantee that you have bed bugs.
If you notice bites on you or your family and are concerned you may have bedbugs, first do a thorough check of all of your bedding and mattresses, looking not only for live bugs but also looking for tiny black dots that may look like dirt in the seams of your mattresses, pillows, and linens.

Easy Ways To Keep Your House Clean During Holiday Dinners

Diana Valle, founder of Honest Maids here with some helpful tips to make your Thanksgiving cleanup easier.

thanksgiving dinner,Thanksgiving Dinner Clean Up Tips, holiday hosting ideas, turkey recipes, hosting thanksgiving, bullet recipes

Thanksgiving dinner is one of the most special meals of the year. But it often creates one of the biggest messes of the year too.

Thanksgiving dinner clean up tips, but for other cool tips check out my other blog post on 10 Tips for Stress-Free Thanksgiving Hosting

Tip #1 Get Organized

This means setting up multiple bags on your trash container(s) so that you quickly and easily pull out full bags leaving an empty one ready. Run your dishwasher ahead of time and find all the lids to your tupperware or other food containers so that you can quickly put leftovers away.

See all the different deals and containers found at Amazon!

Tip #2 User Paper Towels

Use paper towels when dealing with the turkey this Thanksgiving! The biggest mistake I see people do during thanksgiving dinner most people do that I think is also the easiest to prevent is having dirty rags with raw turkey meat on them that you have to wash and meanwhile keep separate from everything else! if you use paper towels you are saving yourself a wash load as well as making your cooking prep a breeze! Clean the inside with a paper towel too!

Tip #3 Clean Up As You Go

This is pretty much self-explanatory! The Biggest tip I have for you here is to fill the roaster with water and soap! Even before you serve anything. As soon as the turkey is done, get your roaster and let it soak so that it’s easy to wash. If you use an aluminum, you could skip this completely.

Tip #4 Get The Kids To Clear The Table

Having the kids help cleaning has many advantages but during the holiday season they seem to have a lot of energy so hire their help, keep them busy and have them put all the dirty utensils in a large bowl with water and soap. Even if you don’t get to do dishes right after dinner you can easily wash them in the morning.

Tip #5 Host Dinner BYOD style!

Let everyone bring a dish and have it take it home with leftovers and all so that you aren’t left behind scraping food off containers and dishes. Everyone splits the work back at home.

Avondale Glendale Peoria Homeowner Tip: How To Prevent and Get Rid of Bed Bugs!

eco-tech bed image

Sometimes with children, it can be near impossible preventing certain things such as bed bugs. Then, of course, we don’t help ourselves when we go thrift shopping or looking for antiques and let me tell you, even the best antique auction houses have been known to sell bed bugs along with their items.

Really Good Measures To Prevent and Get Rid of Bed Bugs!

#1 – Good Consistent Vacuuming

Thorough vacuuming can help prevent bed bugs. Carefully vacuum all your rugs, floors, upholstered furniture, bed frames, under beds, around bed legs, and all cracks and crevices around the room. If your vacuum uses a bag, change the bag after each use so the bed bugs don’t spread or escape if you happen to catch any.

#2 – Store away your clothes in vacuum sealed bags

Seasonal clothing or decorations should be sealed away and properly put away. Although we tend to simply want to put these items away for the year, it’s important we plan things out and consider that your clothing items will sit there attracting bed bugs and other pests all year long.

#3 – Don’t overlook your pets

If you have pets its extremely important that you regularly clean, wash and vacuum their favorite spots around the house. Cats especially since they tend to roam around the community during the day if they are indoor/outdoor pets.

#4 – Don’t Do It Alone

This is especially important if you think you already have bed bugs in or around your house! Contact a local pest control company to help you get rid of them and show the best possible next steps.

Eco-Tech in Peoria, is our preferred company not just because of their customer service but because they use specialized equipment that kills this pest with really high heat which means you’re not left breathing nasty poisons lingering around your house.

#5 – Don’t Use Unclean / Unsourced Coverings

They sure are handy! When we move we rent them from places like U-Haul to cover our furniture but sometimes they get pricey, and if you need many of them you may want to look for extra protectors through Craigslist or from friends and family but I truly recommend that you don’t. If you do, please make sure that they are cleaned and good to use.

#4 – Use ClimbUp Monitors!

ClimpUp Monitors are pretty handy because you can place these under almost any bed stand and easily spot any activity. They are really inexpensive and super useful, Amazon has these for sale for about $15 per set. Get them here.

If you suspect of any bed bug activity, please please don’t fight them it alone! Call a professional and get rid of them for sure. Give Eco-Tech a try, I’ve had the pleasure to work with them in the past and really do recommend them.  If you do happen to need them, they often offer 15-20% OFF if you let them know you are a referral.

The Crazy-Looking Yoga Slippers People Can’t Stop Asking About

Screenshot 2017-09-26 14.53.16

It happens like clockwork: Yoga class ends, and a curious yogi walks toward me, points at my feet, and asks, “What are those?”

The items in question are the Nike Studio Wrap, a product that Nike calls a “women’s training shoe,” but that’s more accurately described as a “not-a-sock, not-a-shoe, slipper thing that everybody will ask you about.”

Leah_Kim_NTC_workout_4_original

I don’t mind the nonstop questions and inquisitive stares. After all, the wraps have been an absolute game-changer for me, so why not spread the love?

I first discovered the wraps back in 2014, when they first came out. I’d been practicing yoga for a few months, and while I was enjoying the classes, I was really struggling with certain poses.

Take, for example, warrior I. I couldn’t figure out how to fully square my hips toward the front of the mat. I wrote it off as my body just not being able to stretch that way, but as it turned out, I wasn’t pushing through the outer edge of my back foot enough. And that was happening because my sweaty feet simply weren’t gripping the mat.

Now, some people are magical yogi unicorns who don’t sweat during a typical vinyasa flow. They can sun salute from dawn to dusk and never have to worry about their mat turning into a Slip ‘N Slide. I, however, am not one of those people, so I needed to call in some backup.

Why not just wear socks? Well, I tried that. It wasn’t much of an improvement. Regular socks didn’t offer the extra grip I needed. Sticky socks (like the ones used for barre class or children’s jungle gyms) were a slightly better option, but something about wearing socks during my practice didn’t feel quite right.

After watching a video about the wraps’ origin story and product development, I was sold. They were exactly what I’d been looking for, and I was eager to put them to the test.

That was three years ago. I haven’t looked back since.

I no longer struggle to root myself to the floor during a pose, and my feet no longer slip all over the place. The wraps provide much-needed traction and functionality while still looking cute and stylish. They fit comfortably yet snug, so I never have to adjust them during class. It’s like having a second layer of skin that grips the mat with ease, making each pose fluid and each transition seamless.

Perhaps what I love most about the wraps is that they’re part of what I call my “yogi tool kit,” which gets me in the right headspace for my practice. You have to “be in the present,” as they say, but of course, between daily stresses and to-do lists, that’s easier said than done. Having my designated tools—my mat, blanket, and wraps—ready to go helps clear my head, whether it’s for a 10-minute session at home or a 75-minute flow at a studio.

So now, when someone inevitably asks about what’s on my feet, I just respond with my well-practiced spiel: They’re the Nike Studio Wrap 4. Here’s why they’re cool (see above), how much they cost (at $55, not exactly cheap, but definitely worth it), and where to get them at Nike stores or online.

Thank you for reading!

If the Nike ones are a bit too pricey for something you may not be too sure you want to commit using to, you can definitely use these by  ToeSox Women’s Bella Half Toe Grip Non-Slip for Ballet, Yoga, Pilates, Barre Toe Socks

Yoga Exercises You Should Be Doing

Yoga is known to decrease stress and increase body awareness and flexibility. But despite its seeming superpowers, it falls a little short in one area: dynamic, pulling movements.

“All of yoga involves pushing,” says Trina Altman, certified yoga teacher and creator of Yoga Deconstructed. “There’s no pulling. It’s bodyweight training, so you’re missing out on external resistance from a weight or a stretchy band.”

With that in mind, Altman created a series of unique exercises using a yoga blanket and two blocks to incorporate pulling and strength-based movements into her yoga classes. “Most yoga poses involve being in an end range of motion, and that’s where we’re very weak,” she explains. “By doing blanket exercises, you have to strengthen in your end ranges of motion, so it’s going to help you with your yoga poses.”

Altman shared 10 of her favorite blanket exercises to help you balance out your regular yoga practice, build strength, and reduce your risk of injury.

1. Blanket Slide

Do this exercise to target the pulling muscles along your back and help balance your shoulders from all the pushing done in traditional yoga poses.

Lie on the blanket on your stomach with arms extended in front of you, hands on floor, and gaze toward floor. Draw shoulders down back as you press into hands and bend elbows to pull body across the floor. As hands near hips, lift shoulders and legs to come into a slight backbend. Reach hands back out in front of you to continue pulling yourself straight across floor.

2. Sliding Side Split

Your inner thighs are often stretched in yoga classes. Use this exercise to strengthen them as well.

Stand tall on a blanket with feet slightly wider than hip width and hands on hips for balance. Engage core, then push into feet and use inner thighs to pull your legs together. Reverse the motion and push legs back out. Continue to repeat.

3. Block Tap

This move targets the “turnout” muscles in your hips to help you prepare for standing balance poses.

Lie on back with a yoga block between heels and legs turned out. Bend knees to bring legs into a tabletop position. Slowly lower heels toward the floor, keeping core engaged (no arching your back off the floor), and balancing block between heels. Lift legs back up and repeat.

4. Sliding Forearm Plank

This variation of a forearm plank builds core and shoulder strength to prep your shoulders for the transition between downward-facing dog and plank and when lowering during chaturanga.

Kneel with a blanket under knees and forearms resting on two yoga blocks. Slide knees out into a kneeling forearm plank. Pause for two counts and then pull knees back in. When you slide out, focus on keeping neck long and abdominals lifted.

5. Heel Push and Pull

Try this footwork move to strengthen your hamstrings, which will help balance out all the backs-of-the-legs stretching done in yoga.

Lie on your back with both legs straight, a blanket under your heels and block between your ankles. Keeping hips still, push into heels and drag the blanket toward your butt. (You can also do this exercise with your legs turned in and turned out as variations.) Push legs back to starting position and repeat.

6. Hamstring Slide With Internal Rotation

For an additional hamstring challenge, use this move to target the backs of your legs and create strength and balance in the lower body.

Lie faceup with your head and torso resting on the blanket. Place a yoga block between your knees to activate inner thighs and place feet wider than hip width on the floor for internal rotation. Extend arms straight up. Push into heels to drag your torso toward feet then push back to starting position. (You can also do this exercise with your legs in parallel or turned out for additional variations.)

7. Yogi Leg Lift

Many yoga poses focus on stretching the hip flexors. Try these leg lifts to strengthen your hip flexors and keep hips balanced.

Sit tall with legs extended out in front of you and arms by sides with fingertips resting on the floor for support. Without leaning back or rolling your pelvis under, lift right leg off floor. Lower it slowly with control. Repeat on other side. (If you have tight hamstrings or difficulty sitting up straight, you can sit on top of a folded blanket or a yoga block.)

8. Floor Eraser

Strengthen your chest and prepare for arm balances and handstands with this move.

Come into a modified plank position on knees with hands on the blanket, shoulder-width apart. Engage chest muscles to slowly draw hands together, using the blanket to slide across floor. Make sure neck stays long and shoulders and lower back don’t collapse. Slowly push hands back out to starting position and repeat.

9. Sliding Side-Over

Use side-overs to strengthen your spine and obliques for side bending, a movement that isn’t usually trained in yoga.

Lie on back with entire body on the blanket, legs extended straight out. Hold onto your right wrist with left hand. Use obliques to pull right wrist toward left foot, so you come into a banana shape. Return to starting position for one rep. Then repeat on left side.

10. Swimming Cobra

Try this cobra-with-a-twist to strengthen the pulling muscles in your shoulders that aren’t easily targeted with traditional yoga poses.

Lie facedown with arms extended out straight and the blanket gathered between hands. Legs are extended long with abs and glutes engaged. Making a circular breaststroke motion with hands, pull the blanket toward you as you bend your elbows and lift your chest into extension. Push arms forward and lower chest with a relaxed neck to complete the movement. Only lift chest as high as you can without pinching in your lower back—like cobra pose.

Kids Bedrooms should reflect their interests

book case

Parents, do you want your kids’ bedrooms to be relaxing oases where they can decompress and escape the academic and social pressures of school? Don’t assume that means muted colors and quiet sanctuary.

Instead, designers say, let the room reflect your child’s personality, even if that involves some more vibrant colors and patterns.

“Many parents find that hot pink walls are better than hot pink hair, right? And it’s only a bucket of paint. Such a space allows kids to be themselves, and that is a calming thing in today’s world,” said interior designer Kelee Katillac, who enjoys designing children’s rooms and runs a studio in Kansas City, Mo.

She and other designers recommend working with kids to create an organized, multifunctional and comfortable bedroom with an interesting color palette.

WHAT’S THE BEDROOM FOR?

A first step to creating a great space for kids is defining what purposes the room must serve, Katillac said. Most kids do more than sleep in their rooms. They play, do homework and entertain friends there. Delineate a place for each of the room’s main functions, she said.

If your children intend to study in their room, supply a desk, chair, and of course good lighting. Create a reading nook for the bookworm. For the kid who likes to have friends over, provide a seating area — even if it’s just cushions and a rug — and have mood lighting or even decorative string lighting.

Defining separate areas helps kids relax because it creates a sense of structure, Katillac said.

FINDING THE RIGHT COLORS

Sometimes subtle colors are best, slight variations in the shades will add layers to any room without over compromising on any one strong color. Keeping things versatile and affordable as they grow. In our house, we use this approach to even the things we decorate with or use for their development such as the hanging height ruler.

Wall color can impact your mood, said Sue Wadden of Sherwin-Williams in Cleveland. She recommends avoiding primary colors in favor of more natural or neutral tones like greens, browns, light grays or soft blues.

“It’s easier on the eye,” she said. “It’s easier on the brain.”

To promote easy clean relaxation, consider using softer or less saturated versions of the bright colors typically used in kids’ rooms, she added. If you’re concerned that your child’s color choices could get too bold, pick several colors you could live with and let them select from those, Wadden suggested.

You can also use other elements to add the pops of color that kids crave. Consider painting a colorful accent wall, or adding a vibrant rug or patterned comforter.

“Bring in brighter tones with secondary pieces,” Wadden said.

BRING IN THEIR INTERESTS

Let your child help choose the room’s theme, said Janet Paik, an editor with the interior decorating website Houzz. “If you want it to feel like their personal sanctuary, it needs to be their own space chosen by them,” she said.

It can be easy and inexpensive to incorporate a favorite hobby, sports team or activity into the room. Decals, bedding, artwork, and accessories can highlight a child’s interests, and are easy to change out as they get older, said Melisa White of Melisa White Interiors in New York.

Writable surfaces such as chalkboard paint or large marker boards also let kids customize their room.

book case

EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE

Provide bins, shelving, and storage that children can reach to take out and put away their things, White said. Everyone enjoys a tidy clean room if not their entire home to be neat and clean: “Clutter can cause stress and anxiety, although children may not understand that or recognize it,” she said.

An organized clean room will help children relax, agreed Heather Turgeon, co-author of “The Happy Sleeper: The Science-Backed Guide to Helping Your Baby Get a Good Night’s Sleep — Newborn to School Age” (TarcherPerigee, 2014).

“A lot of clutter and toys can keep kids’ minds activated, the same way having an office desk in your clean room or a pile of stressful papers beside your bed might do for you,” said Turgeon, a psychotherapist.

USE WHAT THEY LOVE

Consider including a shelf or bulletin board where kids can display items important to them, she said. When Katillac was working with a teenager who collects shoes, she put in shelving where he could set out some of his favorite pairs. That not only kept things orderly; it created a meaningful vignette in the room.

“Kids are very vocal about the things they like,” Katillac said. “Look at their interests and see if you can turn it into a piece of artwork.”

I love these My Heart Bubble New York City Prints from My Heart Bubble and think they are absolutely perfect for Airbnb homes. Imagine having a wall with a few of these babies in them! Your guest will love you for thinking of them and their places of origin.

MONITORING SCREENS

Ideally, the room should be media-free at bedtime, Turgeon said.

One of the biggest differences in our house actually is not that hard to replicate – We have created a communal charging station where the entire family charges our electronics in some place other than our individual bedrooms.  – Diana Valle

“Have everybody say good night to their devices at least an hour before bedtime,” she said.

If children keep a computer in their room, try to separate it visually from the sleep space with a bookshelf, curtain or another creative design idea.

Most houses have outlets at the bottom of where our night stands would be, but when it comes to our kids room and night time – its important to have a subtle dim night light for them. If you don’t have space in your house for a dedicated charging station, try using one of these round lights by Anpress, they have USB connections so that you can hide the night light behind the stand, making it more subtle and easy on the shut eyes, while providing you clutter free way to keep their iPads or phones charging in their room.

Diana ValleHello! My name is Diana and I launched Honest Maids in 2012 because we were all really disappointed with the established cleaning companies like Merry, Molly, and Queen to name a few!

After having to hire them due to a medical condition I had, I experienced their unreliability, bad service, and highly expensive pricing!
I figured I couldn’t be the only one, so I made it my mission to create a service that addresses all expectations. I created our 360 cleaning system, built a great team, and figured honest transparent pricing so that anyone who needs help can actually afford it too!

Honest Maids was created for the hard working family who cares about their community and the products used in their home. We’ve made cleaning a truly affordable luxury.  Hire us or read our reviews anywhere online and you will see that we are truly better.

Dinnerware Trends For 2018

Keeping up with trends isn’t about keeping up with the Jones’

Sometimes, it’s about us enjoying our space and what we have built for ourselves in our own home. So for this coming winter of 2017 and upcoming 2018 trends I wanted to share some really beautiful sets that I have found and have started collecting myself.  I gotta tell you that from all the homes that we visit when Honest Maids gets a call onto people’s homes. We see trends, we clean them, and organize them. One of the biggest trend I have seen coming is the hand drawn patterns and sketches on plates is becoming more and more popular.

farmhouse-kitchen-table-plate-rack

The colors are meant to be organic, natural and reminiscing of what nature has to offer. Natural patterns are becoming so trendy that even fish scale tiles and wall decor on baths and showers are growing fast in demand. Here are some sets you can find at affordable prices and that we seen enjoyed in homes all the way from Avondale, to Scottsdale and other cities like New Jersey and Chicago where we get to help as well.

You Have Parasites! What You Can Do To Rid Of Them

dreamstime_l_45266120-e1453823488281-500x480

Everyone Has Parasites! Here’s what you need to know

dreamstime_l_45266120-e1453823488281-500x480

As you may know, my story began with me trying to find answers to the many autoimmune diseases I seem to have. Many doctors couldn’t pinpoint what I had and some went as far as saying it was all in my head! Until I went to an old doctor, I mean he must have been 200 years old! Of course, he wasn’t but he was old and relied solely on his knowledge and some basic tools to determine that what I had was solely due to my stomach and digestive system. So I tried out his suggestions. A year later my condition was dormant.
What is a Parasite?
“A parasite is a tiny organism that lives on or in another host organism and is fed at the expense of its host. In other words the parasites that live inside us use up our vitamins, proteins and all other nutrients. Not only do they do this, they also do their “business” inside us releasing their toxic bacteria and viruses inside us.” – Dr. Hulda Clark. While they are often fond of the colon, this is not the only place parasites can be found. Any part of your body is vulnerable to infestation: the lungs, liver, esophagus, brain, blood, muscles, joints, skin…and even your eyes.

Everyone Has Parasites
Almost every single person living has parasites. It’s simply a part of life, similar to how bacteria is on every single thing we touch. Even Dr. Oz (who means well but is corporately sponsored and funded) says “ninety percent of humans will have a problem with parasites in their lifetime.”

When we think about parasites, we think about third world countries that may not have access to clean water or hygiene products. That is simply not true. North Americans and other westerners suffer just as many parasite infections as less developed countries, we just are simply unaware and don’t connect the dots of our symptoms. And it’s not our fault, because who ever taught us about parasites?! Did I learn about them in high school science? No! Did I learn about them in college biology? NO! I even asked my MD (who I don’t see anymore because western medicine has failed me) about parasites and he said it’s “crazy talk,” just like he and a gyno told me candida was a myth. Yet, my “crazy talk” led me to do a parasite cleanse during which I passed hundreds of liver flukes, roundworms, flatworms, etc. I’m talking pounds a day.

Our parasites grow and reproduce in our bodies as we grow, but how well they will thrive depends on our health. They do not thrive well when we are healthy, especially when we regularly partake in cleansing. It is the less healthy animal or human that has the most parasites. It’s a cycle – poor health and eating habits make the body and immune system more susceptible to parasites, and similarly, parasites cause poor health and TONS of symptoms!!

Parasites even live in other parasites. They have their own bacteria and viruses. The bacteria themselves have viruses. One type of roundworm is called Ascaris, and is very common in humans. I passed a lot of these during my first cleanse. Ascaris brings us Chicken Pox and mumps, Herpes 1 and 2, Coxsackie viruses, and Adenovirus (the common cold). It also brings us Mycobacterium avium that causes night sweats. Basically, instead of vaccinating, from birth we should/could be parasite cleansing and using essential oils that kill parasites in our daily routines. OTHER CULTURES DO THIS..THE AMISH CONSTANTLY CLEANSE THEMSELVES AND THEIR CHILDREN OF PARASITES! THIS IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE TO THEM AND IS PASSED DOWN THROUGH GENERATIONS. It’s important to note that autism rates among the Amish are almost 0.

We didn’t notice these connections in the past because these diseases are commonplace and the parasites so tiny and quiet. And yet – you can connect a parasite to every single human disease. Where did I learn all of this information? Dr. Hulda Clark is a physician who spent her entire life researching parasites (and what frequency these beings operate on, thus how to kill them!) I read her book, “The Cure For All Diseases,” and it changed my entire life and view of the body. My friend’s mother cured her breast cancer with Dr. Clark’s second book, “The Prevention of all Cancers.” Although there are many cures for cancer, all of the cures involve herbs, protocols, or enemas/cleanses that rid the body of both candida and parasites, which play a huge part in the cause of cancer and disease. Like I have always said, cancer is a state of toxicity, not a viral disease. It is a case of the cells not receiving oxygen, and the body becomes acidic and toxic. Like we just went over, the more you make unhealthy choices (and eat acid forming foods), the more your body deteriorates and allows parasites to take over. The more unhealthy you are, the more parasites you have, and when you have cancer, you are extremely unhealthy of course. This means you are full of parasites, and they are contributing to the systemic toxicity we refer to as cancer itself. Parasites, after all, eat up your nutrients and vitamins. Even if you’re eating well trying to cure disease, you must take care of parasites first so that you can actually BENEFIT from your food!

Believe it or not, at Honest Maids, a lot of clients are people who suffer from one injury or another.

We actually do a free monthly cleaning to those suffering from Lupus.

When I started my health search a few years ago I was surprised to learn that I have Lupus and so now we try to help others facing this painful suffering.

Symptoms of Parasites
A lot of the symptoms are similar to tons of other disorders such as candida overgrowth, infection, etc. Sometimes it feels like in every article you read online about health, you can identify with lots of symptoms they have listed. This, again, is because once the body deteriorates or starts to become toxic due to any cause, the signs present themselves very similarly.

constipation
diarrhea
gas and bloating
painful menstruation
irritable bowel syndrome
joint and muscle aches
anemia
cravings, especially sugar
allergies
skin conditions – mostly irritation/itching at nose, ears, eyes, anus – but also potentially rashes, hives, eczema
tumors
nervousness
sleep disorders
hyperactivity, anxiety
teeth grinding
chronic fatigue
fuzzy thinking
headaches
runny nose
blisters on lower lip inside mouth
loss of appetite
bad taste in the mouth
acne
fever
vomiting (may return several times a year)
weight gain OR may have trouble gaining weight, children especially
long-term presence may contribute to the development of food allergies
dark areas under eyes
yeast/candida infection, especially if it returns
A lot of these symptoms are common in people with Lupus by the way.

A lot of woman unknowingly have parasites in their uterus, which are partly the cause of painful menstrual periods!

How Do We Get Parasites?
The University of Maryland says, “Parasites can live within the intestines for years without causing any symptoms.” They mention “exposure to child and institutional care centers” as one possible “cause” of parasites, which pretty much means all schools, doctors offices, hospitals, etc. So, all children are especially susceptible, and so is anyone who has ever been in contact with children or public institutions is as well. Parasites are incredibly contagious, especially when you don’t wash your hands a lot (once again, children!) IN SHORT: they are a part of life.

You also get parasites from eating fruits and vegetables. Yup! Microscopic parasites live all over plants (and everything else). Wash them well, but even then, you’ll get some. Next, you get parasites from meat, even if it’s cooked, but especially if you like your meat rare. Third, you get parasites from touching others and coming into contact with their body fluids. Fourth, you really get parasites if you have a pet or live with/around animals. Ever have a pet lick your face? You have tons. Don’t worry, just cleanse. IN SHORT: Parasites are unavoidable. Cleansing a few times a year and boosting your immune system with perfect whole foods is the name of the game.

I use a Detox Cleanse that has really helped me out throughout the years and have grown very fond of. If you want to look more into you can check Detox Cleanse Safe and All Natural  out on Amazon too. They have a ton of reviews!

detox cleanse safe and natural

When your immune system isn’t working, you’re even more at risk. This is what happened to me, and actually as I write this, I think it’s also happening to my hubby. Although parasites are unavoidable, your infection can get much worse when your immune system is low. According to Dr. Hulda Clark, “For humans, unclean food and water has also brought immunodepression, so parasites can increase even further. Water pollution has brought these critical immune system depressants: PCBs (Monsanto), benzene, asbestos, azo dyes(synthetic colors in food and clothing), heavy metals, motor oil and radioactive elements. Food has brought the same depressants, through food processing that uses the same polluted water to accomplish it all.

As a result, humans now have 4 very common flukes: the sheep liver fluke, the lung fluke, the pancreatic fluke and human liver fluke. Don’t believe that the sheep liver fluke is for sheep alone. Hosts can be substituted when immunity is down so that we can become the “accidental” host or “incidental” host. Less common flukes are becoming more common, too, such as Gastrothylax, which brings us Cystic Fibrosis, Down’s Syndrome and Polycystic Kidney Disease, 3 genetic diseases. You may see any of these now while you are killing parasites with a vigorous program that induces a brief diarrhea. Get a strong flashlight and keep plastic cups and utensils in the bathroom, as well as Lugol’s iodine, so you can see your own parasites safely and identify them.

Standby, because I’m working on a cool free E-Book for you all!

Let’s be happy, enjoy what matters in life and forget about what doesn’t. – Diana Valle

Easy Way To How To Clean Burnt Food Off A Pot or Pan

Easy Way How To Clean A Burnt Pot or Pan

how to clean burnt food off a stainless steel pan by green cleaning service expert honest maids peoria arizona

Supplies:

  • White vinegar (nothing says “green” like cleaning with vinegar)
  • Baking soda
  • Water (again, green cleaning at its best!)
  • Double-sided sponge

Directions:

Step 1

Fill the pot or pan with a layer of water. The amount of water you use will vary based on the depth of the pot and the area of the stain. You want the water level to be at or near the height of the stain while still providing enough room for the addition of vinegar and baking soda.

More: What You Need To Know About Cleaning Your Oven

Add about a cup of vinegar to the pot, again adjusting the amount of vinegar based on the depth of the pot and the area of the stain. For very large burns, add more vinegar. For smaller burns or shallower pans, add less.

Step 2

Place the pot or pan on the stove, and bring the mixture to a boil. It shouldn’t take long before you start to notice a difference in the stain’s appearance.

Take the pot or pan off the burner, and turn off the stove. Add 2 – 3 tablespoons of baking soda to the mix. Allow the baking soda to fizz and do its work for a few minutes before emptying the mixture from the pot.

Step 4

Scrub clean the pot with the abrasive side of your sponge. You may need to scrub for 30 – 45 seconds, but the burnt spots should come up fairly easily. If the spots are especially stubborn, sprinkle a little dry baking soda on top of them to help abrade the burn marks away. When you’re satisfied that the pot is clean, rinse it thoroughly — it should look as good as new.

Many of us have a dream of owning our own business and while the majority of us can’t figure out what to do, how to start, and when to take the plunge there are a lot of of us who look into franchising as an option to get in business for ourselves.

Franchising however is too damn expensive!
Forget about the time it takes to research the right company, the right market and industry and then go through the application process, the financing process and then training… Woah! …and you still have monthly royalties to have to pay and minimums to meet.

That’s why Honest Maids has come up with a new way to do Franchising
Let’s face it, the cleaning industry is very competitive because is so easy and affordable to start on your own right away. The cleaning janitorial industry is so sought after because is so lucrative, you can make as much money as you are able to earn working directly on the jobs yourself or simply running a business and closing deals for your teams. Starting a business might be easy, but what most don’t realize is that is super hard to actually grow a cleaning business by yourself promoting the same way everyone else does and to the same people. The fact that this industry is so easy to get into is actually a huge reason why many don’t make it – most new owners lack the discipline and insight to grow sustainably. That’s where Honest Maids comes in.
This Arizona based company has figured out that instead of competing against one another, business owners should work together to help control prices and expectations by consumers. This company has also leveraged the power of social media and digital inbound marketing which has helped it grow in to a total of 7 cities and several states. For those who are starting out and want to compete solely based on price, the harsh reality is that they won’t last but if they join forces under a brand that is helping promote their business in their market and requires no monthly minimums, no royalties – well that just a no brainer – why wouldn’t you join?
Honest Maids sells Branding Memberships!
A new business owner interested in a franchise just has to pass an initial application process, and then subscribe to the companies marketing campaign efforts. Each month that you pay you have the right to leverage their brand, get included in their marketing campaign, receive training, leads, support and more. Similar to a franchise but without the ridiculously high fees! This is how franchises should always operate because when a company helps their new members succeed their overall brand power increases, their profits increase and their sustainability increase. Is how franchising should be done – on membership with no minimal almost-zero financial pre-requisites. Start your own business as a membership owner of an Honest Maids in your city. Email info@honestmaids.co for more details.

el paso realtor property manager blog how to make a bed in el paso maid service cleaning affordable home cleaning service

Your bed is the focal point of your bedroom, but often times it’s just a rectangle in the middle of the room with some blankets thrown on it. Have you ever wondered how to make your bed look as picture perfect as the ones you see in magazines? And furthermore, have you ever questioned if it’s actually worth making the bed every morning?

To answer the latter question, the latest report from Psychology Today indicates
that over 70 percent of morning bed-makers consider themselves happy, whereas over 60 percent of non-bed-makers consider themselves unhappy. Is a straightened comforter the route to joy? It doesn’t hurt to find out! And to help you make your bed as perfect as the ones in TV shows and magazine spreads, here’s a helpful guide.

Step 1: Invest in Good Quality Sheets and Tuck Them in
Luckily for us, we live in Arizona where there is much variety in styles, quality and prices to chose from! Give your linen the attention the deserve, let them express who you are and remember that just like your daily clothes, they go through a lot of use, so invest in great quality! While you don’t need to buy 1000-thread count Egyptian cotton, it is important to get something that’s going to feel comfortable night after night. Once you have the ones you want, start making your bed by putting on the fitted sheet first. Make sure that all the corners are lined up and pulled extra tight. Next, place the top sheet upside down (you do this so that when you fold over the top edge, the pattern or finished edges are visible).

Step 2: Add a Thin Blanket
These are fluffy over through type blankets that you might use during summer but not in winter.  A thin blanket (which by the way is perfect for our Arizona weather!) paired with a fluffier one makes you more cozy and comfy but it also makes the bed look so freakishly amazing when is all done! At the head of the bed, fold the top sheet and blanket over together about 12 inches. Tightly tuck the sides of the top sheet and blanket under the mattress. When winter starts blowing in, consider investing in a microfiber blanket or wool blanket to best trap the heat and keep you warm at night.

Step 3: Spread Out the Comforter
Whether you have a #duvet (we’ve noticed that a lot of our clients are using these more and more!!) or a comforter, drape it over the blanket. The comforter should be centered on top of the bed with equal amounts of overhang on the sides and bottom. Then, fold over the top half of the comforter to reveal the top sheet and blanket underneath. Coverlets are also popular these days. These are thicker blankets that can act as a lightweight comforter during the summer months. Are you on Facebook? Add us too.

Step 4: Throw on the Pillows (of various sizes!)
A trick we’ve learned about pillows is that you need to arrange them in triangular fashion; you want to start by placing the larger pillows at the very back, these are your foundation, then go for the standard size (sleeping pillows) and place them on leaning but have 1 less pillow than the row before, so if you started with 3 now you will have 2. Next the smaller decorative pillows go last.

Step 5: Add Details
Adding a folded quilt or blanket at the foot of the bed can add another layer of visual interest to the overall look of your bed. Be careful not to get too crazy with the patterns, but if it fits within the design, go for it! If you are a realtor here in Phoenix, call your local maids, when we clean the properties for you we will make sure to make the bed be focal point of a space to showcase what a house can really look like when is nice and clean and nicely staged.

What’s the best part of having an inviting bed?  Getting into those crisp cool sheets after a long day and drifting off into a good night’s sleep. And remember, if you don’t feel like changing the linens yourself, Honest Maids can help. We’re here to up tidy up and clean your bedroom, kitchen, living room and bathroom. Call us at 602-500-2285 today!

woman jumping on horse

Kylie Katz is 16 and already she has learned some of the biggest and toughest lessons in life.

As a competitive equestrian, she practices six days a week and has learned to work in partnership with her horse, Tucker. When ring-like rashes started appearing on her face, her family and doctors suspected ringworm. But the medications didn’t work, so she had blood tests and a biopsy before being diagnosed with Discoid Lupus approximately six months later.

Her mother Michele is a registered nurse and her mother’s wife, Melissa, is a nurse practitioner. Kylie has two brothers– Jonah, age 3, and Grey, 8 months old. The absence of common symptoms, such as joint pain and fatigue, made her parents overlook lupus as a possibility. Kylie’s parents were persistent in advocating for her care and pushing for a diagnosis quickly, and the family believes that supportive healthcare providers make all the difference in Kylie’s health.

After her diagnosis, Kylie’s immediate concern was for her future.

Currently, she has seven doctors. Her choice in colleges will be limited by the need to stay close to home, or face finding a whole new care team. She has had to start wearing coverup make-up and sunscreen, monitor her stress levels, and wear sun protective clothing. She’s constantly managing her health in order to minimize symptoms.

Understandably, kids at school asked a lot of questions about her skin, and the family decided early on to be open about Kylie’s diagnosis. While they initially feared that people would focus on the physical effects of the disease, they began to see a shift in attitudes based on their willingness to talk about lupus.

Ultimately, Kylie was named prom queen and her optimism about the future rebounded.

“I won’t change the plans for my life because of this disease. I won’t let lupus define who I am and who I’m going to be in the future. I am not afraid.

My plan is to face the challenges with a positive and optimistic attitude. I will continue to ride horses and I will go to college. I am the same person inside, I may have lupus but lupus does not have me.”

As for right now, Kylie is organizing a purple foam dance party for lupus awareness in August, and her Walk to End Lupus team “K. Crew” has already exceeded its fundraising goals. We’re so inspired by your optimism and energy, Kylie!
Honest Maids continues to do good by our community through volunteerism that takes our teams to churches, fairs, community centers but just as important for us is our dedication and deep personal understanding of what lupus does to people and we are very proud of offering free home cleaning to those who are struggling with this condition. Unfortunately lupus cannot be cured but through healthy lifestyle changes that include more rest and less stress – lupus can be put to sleep and kept that way. We try to be an asset in that fight.

Cleaning with bleach at home linked to some childhood illnesses

sickchildren

Health conscious parents who keep their homes clean and disinfected may have a new worry: a new study suggests that the home use of bleach might be linked to an increased risk of infections in children.

After surveying the parents of more than 9,000 children from three countries researchers saw a modest 20 percent increase in influenza, a 35 percent increase in tonsillitis and an 18 percent increase in any kind of infection, among kids between the ages of 6 and 12, according to the report published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Even after accounting for factors such as passive smoke exposure in the home, parental education, the presence of household mold and the use of bleach to clean schools, the researchers determined home use of bleach was linked to the illnesses..

This is why you will never see Honest Maids using harsh compound chemicals – we care about our little ones – pets and children.
The researchers, led by Lidia Casas of the Centre for Environment and Health in Belgium, suspect that irritating compounds released into the air by bleach are breathed into the lungs by children, leading to inflammation and a higher susceptibility to infections. Also, independent experts say the findings fall in line with other reports linking cleaning products to adverse health effects in children with asthma.

Never Self Clean Your Oven

Be Honest, when was the last time you cleaned your oven?

oven (1)

Stop before you hit the self-clean button on your appliance — it’s unfortunately not that easy. Most oven repair calls are due to that very feature. During the self-cleaning process, modern ovens get so hot — we’re talking, like, 1,000 degrees — that the fuse pops and burns out the control panels. Despite this common problem, customers demand the option, making ovens without self-cleaning options difficult to sell.

What’s a germ-fearing baker to do with this vicious cycle? Grab the baking soda.

This easy, toxic-chemical-free way to clean your oven will not only make your appliance shine, it will also keep it in good working order.

1. Remove all that is inside
2. Mix 3-4 table spoons of baking soda with water and lemon juice until you have a thick paste
3. Coat everything inside the oven… it should turn brown.
4. Let sit for minimum 5 Hours.
5. When is time, spray with vinegar…let sit for a few minutes.
6. Wipe off with a wet rag (no napkins, you need something sturdy)
7. Enjoy a clean oven that is naturally cleaned :)

For a clean oven and all another cleaning just give us a call.
